Serafina
THE CHILLY, FALL. NIGHT air whipped against Seraâs unprotected face, adding to the rage that fueled her brisk stride. She wound her scarf around her neck too tight in response. The pocket of her jacket buzzed as the garment fought with her attempts to put it on, the Metro still several blocks away. She punched the red button on her phone with her thumb to decline Noraâs call and shoved her phone in her bag.
Sera had trusted that old woman. Trying to make light of her momâs death using vampires went way too far, and Nora opened her big mouth far too often. Why did she think it was okay to tell that woman about Seraâs mother?
Nora knew how hard losing her had been on Sera and her father. And why wasnât Nora just as angry as she was? Was she really more gullible than Sera thought she was? Wasnât Sera usually the gullible one?
Vampires. She snorted. What is she going to come up with next? Werewolves? If this woman seriously believes in vampires, she needs to get some professional help.
Sera muttered into the frosty air, her breath puffing out in steamy clouds before her. Because the city hadnât installed any streetlamps yet, shadows stretched long arms over the residential street, and the overcast sky hid the moonâs shine. The glow from porch lights didnât quite make it to the sidewalk beyond the gated front yards, and the illuminated sign of the Metro entrance stood another block away.
Two figures stepped out of a darkened doorway and blocked her path, close but not close enough for Sera to see their faces. She stopped short, breath catching as she realized how reckless it was to be walking alone at night in an unfamiliar neighborhood, especially after her abduction. Sliding her hand into her bag, she readied the mace.
One of the figures raised his arms toward his face. She heard a click as a lighter flared to life, the end of his cigarette burning. She recognized the light hairâAlexander.
âSolomon?â she asked the other man warily.
His chuckle echoed in reply.
âHello, Serafina.â He lifted his face toward the dark sky and took in a deep breath. âI believe you have something that belongs to us. I can smell it.â
âYou want the amulet? No problem.â She released the mace and dug through her bag, doing her best to ignore his weird comment. Who could smell a piece of jewelry? âIâm tired of this thing wreaking havoc on my life.â
Pulling out the bundled towel, she grasped the amulet in her other hand as the two men stepped toward her in anticipation.
The amulet burst into a brilliant crimson light, flooding the area in a bloody hue.
Sera glanced up at Solomon in fear, expecting him to take the amulet. Only it wasnât the Solomon she knewâhis canines now protruded from his upper lip, twice the length they were before, and his catlike, vertically-constricted pupils glowed a fiery red, smoldering from the inside. They both stumbled back as she raised the amulet in reflex.
